Nature First
One of the most fascinating (and sometimes challenging) aspects of Chitton Farm has been working in harmony with the wildlife on site.
During early surveys, a population of bats was discovered roosting in parts of the property. As a protected species, this meant that all major works had to pause between January and June while conservation measures were put in place.
Working closely with Natural England and a specialist bat ecologist, Annika Binet, we’ve created a plan to protect the bats while allowing the project to move forward. This includes:
- Ongoing monitoring by our dedicated bat conservationist
- Toolbox talks for the build team to ensure everyone understands the protection measures
- Careful oversight of sensitive works, such as the removal of a chimney breast
The presence of wildlife has shaped many design decisions, even how rainwater is managed on site.
And it’s not just bats we’ve been working with. We’ve introduced four bee hives to help pollinate our future gardens and potager, and the land is now home to pigs, sheep and rescued hens.
At Chitton Farm, nature isn’t just something we work around – it’s something we actively protect and welcome.
